At the Huntington Beach JASNA AGM

Random Bits of Fascination Posted on October 17, 2017 by Maria GraceOctober 16, 2017

October 5-8 the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Huntington Beach, California. Now that I’ve decoded all those mysterious letter, what does it all mean? Well, in short, just south of a thousand Janeites gathered to celebrate all things Austen. So what does one do at these things? The options are many and varied. 1. See a Play. The first evening, Diana and Syrie performed a two woman … Continue reading →

Such a good idea in my head: my Belle gown

Random Bits of Fascination Posted on October 14, 2017 by Maria GraceOctober 14, 2017

Sometimes a project seems like a really good idea in your head. Then the reality turns out a little different. After last year’s ball, I came to the conclusion that I really needed another ball gown. Not needed as in “I really want another dress.’ but needed as in (1) Whoever thought trains on a dress were a good idea  was wrong. Very, very wrong. (2) Floor length skirts are totally the wrong length for … Continue reading →

Recently, I had the privilege to travel to Huntington Beach, California for the Annual General Meeting for the Jane Austen Society of North America (trying saying that five times fast…) Since I love all things beachy and tropical, it’s hard to think of a more appealing setting for a conference. So many … Continue reading →

Marriage Annulments in Jane Austen’s World

Random Bits of Fascination Posted on October 10, 2017 by Maria GraceAugust 21, 2018

Marriage was a serious business in the regency. Divorce was nearly impossible to obtain, but what about annulments? What happened if a young person ‘married in haste’ but then repented of his or her decision? Annulment, when possible, was the best option to end a marriage since it did not carry the social stigma of a divorce (which was nearly impossible to obtain). Unlike a divorce, an annulment voided a marriage, making it as if it … Continue reading →

Not a typo—I really meant Nuncheon

Random Bits of Fascination Posted on October 7, 2017 by Maria GraceOctober 24, 2024

On more than one occasion I’ve had a well-meaning reader point out to me a ‘typo’ that wasn’t. I’ll be the first to admit, my typing is less than perfect and typos get by me sometimes. But every once in awhile, I actually typed a weird looking word right.  The word in question is a weird one indeed. It looks like a modern word we use, sort of sounds like that word, seems like it … Continue reading →
