  1. Wow! I now see what the elder Mr. Bingley wanted for his children. Bless his heart. He never got to see that accomplished. Too bad that the classic education for men didn’t help prepare them to manage their estates. They wouldn’t have had a father/grandfather influence and knowledge to fall back on and would have to rely on others with knowledge. Thus, young Bingley asking Mr. Darcy to help him with Netherfield. This was very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  3. “while just a quarter million families made a very comfortable £700 pounds or more per year”

I think that must be a mistake. According to the 1801 census, there were 1.8 million households in Great Britain – a quarter-million families would be roughly one-seventh of the population, which seems rather high. Looking at the 1799 Income Tax rates, a quarter-million families with £700 or more income would be paying the Exchequer at least £17 million , yet only £6 million was raised from all those on incomes of £60 pa or more. That suggests to me that it is a quarter-million people in families with incomes of £700 or more, rather than a quarter-million families.
