  1. Yikes! Those poor, poor babies! As much as I love the 18th and 19th centuries, I am quite happy living in the age of modern medicine! Mind you, the old custom of rubbing whiskey on a babies gum is still around!

  2. Thank you, Lord, I was born in a more sane era… I think. Those poor guys were doing their best with what they knew but, good grief. Even in my time [post WWII] we still made mistakes and years later thought, What were we thinking? That is the nature of the beast.

Look at dentistry now. We are drilling into the jaw and then screwing in dental implants. I wonder… in years to come, if there will be problems with that? In a rush to put medications on the market, we fail to vet them properly. We then learn later that they are harmful. Live and learn. That is what they did and we still do it today. We like to think that we are so advanced and in some areas we are but in others, we are still searching in the dark for relief from illness, disease, and aging. The quest for advances continues. This was interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  3. A lot of practices back then are scary. I am so grateful the Good Lord had me born in this era. I would not have survived birthing a child to begin with.
Very informative and fascinating that they used coral.
