What more does a girl need than a pile of books and a bowl of chocolate? Let’s talk about what we’ve been reading and feeding our inner chocoholics.
While there is a time and a place for gritty, fast paced adventure like Jim Butcher’s urban fantasies–which I enjoy, but can only handle in small doses–there is also a time an a place for sweet simple stories that go down like a delightfully crumbly piece of shortbread with a cup of tea. Those are the books I’m talking about today.
Just so you know, links in the book covers below are Amazon associate links, so if you buy anything through them, I will get a couple of pennies from that.
Scales and Sensibility
Sensible, practical Elinor Tregarth really did plan to be the model poor relation when she moved into Hathergill Hall. She certainly never meant to kidnap her awful cousin Penelope’s pet dragon. A frothy Regency rom-com full of pet dragons and magical misadventures.
Despite the title that suggests otherwise, this is not an Austen retelling, it is more a romance in the tradition of Georgette Heyer, a fun and sometimes a little manic romp through the Regency era with a little pet dragon thrown in to add to the madness. A light sweet treat perfect for the end of a long day!
Matchmaking and Magic
Three fairy Godmothers have a matchmaking assignment in the village of Highbury. But someone is using stolen magic. Trouble is looming, mystery is mounting, and no one is falling in love with the right person.
This one is a fairytale retelling of Emma, with a focus on Harriet Smith. Being a sucker for Harriet Smith, I definitely fell for this one. Light and silly, it strikes all the right notes when you need a visit to fairyland.
I thought the second book Claws and Contrivances by Stephanie Burgis was even better.
