Very intriguing! It could be the location, the reason for building it, or a slew of other reasons.
Market crosses are a feature in most market towns where farmers brought their wares to sell. We could imagine Meryton as a market town where the Bennet sisters liked to mingle and shop on market days. A great place to bump into someone either stranger or friend. Lots of possibilities as a scene setting! I’m anxious to see what you make of it.
I was intrigued by Meg’s comment about Meryton. I don’t believe I’ve ever read of Meryton having a market cross structure although the town is often referred to as being a market town… as well as Lambton. How interesting. You could step out of the rain or buy fresh produce for your larder or an apple for the walk home. You might be able to step behind one of the posts to hide from prying eyes or to watch someone as they ride through town. What fun. I imagine you have something marvelous planned that prompted this post. I can’t wait to read it. Blessings.
