I always enjoy your history findings. I’m wondering if there were any women in the gentry that had a successful business? I’m hoping some were successful outside of prostitution or being a companion, governess, author, or painter. If so, what percentage did?
Related but perhaps separate, did any men of the gentry encourage their wives or other close female relatives to have a paying job outside the home?
I love your posts. I remember reading some of them. The beauty post made me shudder as to what they did to look beautiful. I suppose beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I look back at the 60s and laugh at what we wore. Then I wonder what future generations will say about what we consider beautiful and ask that question… what were they thinking?
