My Secret Addiction
Confession time, we all have them, secret little hang ups and peculiarities that we keep quiet. Today I have to fess up to my secret addiction: pretty office supplies!
Back to school season–oh how I dread thee! Not just the one in the summer, but at the start of the year, too.
The stores lie in wait, tempting me with what is hardest to resist! Pretty notebooks and worse still pretty pens in pretty colors! Pretty office supplies–you are my bane!
What’s a gal to do? All those jazzy notebooks inspire my creativity. What’s more natural for a writer than to want to be surrounded by beautiful papers, in every size and color imaginable.
There’s nothing like the feel of pen on paper to get those plot lines moving. But why so many? (Needless to say, a NON-Writer asked that)
Well, that’s the CDO side of me–it’s like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but with all the letters in alphabetical order AS THEY SHOULD BE! (Ok, I digress, but really, they should be in the right order…)
The colored pens and highlighters each have a role and get used for different things. Seriously, I have a key in front of my calendar-the flowered book under the technicolor zebra there- to index what each of the TEN highlighter colors mean. Some are obvious, like red is for deadlines and green for payday, others, not so much. Different stories have colors associated with them, as do all my children–have to keep their stuff straight in the calendar too, right?
What you don’t see in the stack, yet, is colored pencils. But I will add some soon–I mean sixty four different colors? How can I possibly resist that?
A bit excessive–ok, well, yeah, maybe.
But hey, as far as addictions go, it’s pretty harmless, right? Right? Anyone else out there want to confess your office supply addiction? Please?
I confess. I love and have always loved stationery. I love fancy books to write in with fancy pens to do it with. I have many pencils, pens, sharpeners, rubbers books etc. My favourite shops are office suppliers. To add to that, my partner is confessing too. He’s just as bad as me where stationery’s concerned. (Now we’re having a heated discussion about who has the most stationery. See what you’ve started?) Sorry, my addiction is getting to me.
Oh, I love your flowery books. You’re right, it is a harmless addiction. Great post. 🙂
Always good to hear that I”m not alone, Christine!
What’s worse, each of those pretty books is dedicated to a different upcoming writing project, so I really do HAVE to have all of them!
Too right too. I get excited walking through Staples or Smiths’ stationery shops. Every corner I turn has something to interest me. When giving out prizes in school, I am reluctant to hand over the sparkly, flowery books that I’ve bought. The children love them too. 🙂
I know exactly what you mean. Luckily I have boy-children and they definitely don’t want my flowery-sparkly stuff. So I don’t have to share!
I put up a blog post a few weeks ago asking if OCD types were bothered by it not being in alphabetical order. You are not alone, Maria!
As for the office supplies, I’m right there with you. For me, back-to-school time is like Fashion Week to a clothes horse. Lots of women lust after movie stars, I sigh over my Pilot G-2, 0.38retractable pen.
Each to her own, I say.
I hadn’t thought of it being like fashion week, but you are so right.
My BFF got me this gorgeous enameled, Cross pen for Christmas to celebrate my first book and my poor husband couldn’t figure out the big deal about a pen! LOL
