Books and Chocolate-September 2023
What more does a girl need than a pile of books and a bowl of chocolate? Let’s talk about what we’ve been reading and feeding our inner chocoholics.
Sometimes you just need a good escape. A good, long escape. One that’s easy to slide into and welcomes you with open arms when you return. That’s the sort of series I’d like to talk about today.
Just so you know, links below are Amazon associate links, so if you buy anything through them, I will get a couple of pennies from that.
The Fablehaven Series
For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite. . .
My youngest son is getting ready to move to his first grown-up place and we’re going through things. I found this series on his bookshelves, well read, but definitely from much earlier days. You know how it goes, you’re just going to read the first couple of pages to decide what to do with the books, and pretty soon you’re curled up in the corner with a blanket, pillow and book and the rest of the day is gone.
In a lot of ways these books harkened back to The Chronicles of Narnia with the nature of hidden world and how one gets there, and the very different natures of the siblings. While not at all recreating the C.S. Lewis classics, Brandon Mull successfully utilizes several of Narnia’s tropes.
Though the series is aimed at younger readers, it is definitely appealing to readers of all ages with a engrossing world and relatable characters.
