On the whole, writers aren’t known for being a superstitious lot. Not like professional athletes who, according to some, have the market cornered on superstitious behaviors. No, we writers are normal, well grounded people.
I heard that–that resounding snort and huff that came about from that comment. I know who you are. Watch out. You might just find yourself dead, or more likely, married to Mr. Collin’s stupider twin brother, on page 32 of my next book. You have been warned.
Alrighty then, so maybe we’re not the most normal people out there. But we aren’t superstitious. But, we do have cats.
I’m not sure what it is with writers and cats, but we go together like coffee and cream. That’s not to say we’re not dog people, too. I have a wonderful dog, but I also have not one, but five cats. So, yeah, writers and cats.
Over the years, we’ve had a total of four black cats. At one time, all four of them were alive at once, and would drive our visitors NUTS. One would appear on the right, then disappear, and another would appear on the left. Since we seemed to be the only ones who could easily tell them apart, well, you can see where this is going I’m sure. It was a hoot to be honest with you.
We did get asked, on more than one occasion, about the whole black cats being bad luck thing. You know, a black cat crossing your path and so on. But when you’ve got that many in the house, you think about it mathematically. Multiply to negatives you get a positive, right? So two pairs of black cats cancel each other out–no need to worry about bad luck! Problem solved.
So maybe that’s not why writing takes so long after all.
LOL!! I snorted at your comment but not with derision. I promise. I love your stories and your posts about your cats. Also, thank you very much for the free book Lady Catherine’s Cat. I look forward to reading it. I may have to get a cat in my old age. Who knows… it may improve my disposition. It could happen.
LOL. The right cat can changes one’s disposition–but I can’t promise improvement! LOL
And in Britain, black cats are seen as a sign of good luck and one crossing your path is considered to be a particularly lucky omen. If one walks or runs away from you they are taking your luck with them.
We have a black can that usually runs toward us. We are definitely lucky.
We have two black cats, a brother and sister named Jack and Bella, and they are the sweetest, most friendly and loving cats we’ve ever had. We wouldn’t trade our black cats for anything. And they have always brought us good luck!
There’s definitely something special about black cats!
First, how I love the word ‘stupider.’
Ah, cats. Black or otherwise. I still miss the black cat we had when we were first married, ‘Stinky,’ yeah really original. I wanted one of a neighbor’s kittens so bad, but was just recently engaged to a fantastic guy who was a dog person. So I asked permission. Said fantastic guy has rarely if ever been able to say ‘no’ and he caved. I picked the solid black one, adorable, who promptly adopted the fantastic guy. I mean he really loooovvved him. (Thank goodness too.) A win for team CATS. And absolutely no bad luck. Smart?? omg The stories could go on and on, but I’ve reminisced enough. We’ve always had cats. Alas, I’m no writer though. BTW, he’s totally a cat person now, wouldn’t dream of having a dog. Sorry doggie people. I love them….at your house.
Thank you Maria for the free book!
My hubby was a dog person when we married, but now he’s definitely a cat person. Even our dog is half cat!
