Regency Perspectives on Childhood — 1 Comment

  1. Good grief! When you think about the many characters of Jane Austen, you wonder about their early childhood and which education philosophy or perspective they fall under. It would be an interesting study.

There are the selfish self-centered characters [only to name a few]: Wickham, Caroline, Lydia, Maria Bertram, Aunt Norris, the Crawford siblings, Elizabeth Elliot and her father, etc. Then you have the docile characters: Jane and Mary Bennet maybe Kitty, Fanny Price, Anne Elliot, Charles Bingley, etc. Since Mr. Bennet enjoyed being a scholar, he would have studied the works and philosophies of Locke and Rousseau as well as others. What were his thoughts and was that how he viewed his family? Did he simply give up during the process of so many girls and no son? The difference in the girls is a striking example of his influence, his neglect, then his indolence, and finally his completely ignoring the family. What an interesting post today. Thank you for sharing.
