Books and Chocolate~May 2023
What more does a girl need than a pile of books and a bowl of chocolate? Let’s talk about what we’ve been reading and feeding our inner chocoholics.
A friend of mine introduced me to a concept I really loved. She told me about books she called ‘popcorn’ books. Books that could be consumed like popcorn at the movies, satisfying, easy to digest, and without a lot of fuss.
I love the concept, because there is a certian kind of book that I reach for when I’m in a ‘popcorn’ sort of mood–something low angst, with a promised happy ending, that I don’t have to work very hard at getting into. Don’t get me wrong, I love fantastical worlds, with amazing world-building. But some days, I just want to be carried away into the book world without having to learn a bunch of complex names, magical systems, and places. I know, that sounds a ittle like sacrelige from a fantasy writer, but I’m just being honest! LOL
These two fit the bill as popcorn books for a weary mind.
Just so you know, links below are Amazon associate links, so if you buy anything through them, I will get a couple of pennies from that.
The Chemistry of Love
True love requires a little research and development in a funny, heart-racing romance by Sariah Wilson, the bestselling author of The Paid Bridesmaid.
Leaning hard into the ‘fake dating’ romance trope, these two chemists almost miss the chemistry between them. A nice, low angst romance with protagonists who are pleasant to spend time with. Definite popcorn material! (That’s a compliment, btw.)
The Marriage Code
In Brooke Burroughs’s endearing debut novel set in vibrant India, enemies turned allies encounter obstacles in an unexpected multicultural romance.
The thing I enjoyed most about this popcorn book was the setting. Much of the book takes place in India, a place the author has experienced first hand and makes come alive. I love it when books take me to far away places, but don’t make me fight every inch of the way to get there. Hanging out with the computer programmer protagonists was a pleasure.

It’s amazing how difficult a good popcorn book is to write. They look fun and fluffy. Not in the creating of them. Anyway, I want to be Sariah Wilson when I grow up.
