Longbourn: Dragon Entail
In which the author discovers writing dragons is more complicated than she expected.
We all know that feeling when we’ve started a project without a thought for how complex it might become in the future. It’s no different for an author starting a new series. Or at least this author, starting a new series.
I really should have expected that dragons would make things more complicated. MUCH more complicated. I had vague the vague sense I probably needed to start keeping track of all the bits and bobs that made up the dragon world.
I only wish I had listened to that little voice in the back of my head sooner as things became rapidly more complex.
I give you …
Longbourn:Dragon Entail
A dragon’s imagination is very rapid. It jumps from separation to anxiety, and anxiety to wreaking havoc.
Fitzwilliam Darcy finds caring for a baby dragon more of a fraught guardianship than anticipated. Little Pemberley may have survived a perilous hatching and still successfully imprinted on humans, but she’s pining for one particular human to the point she is fast becoming a danger to herself and others.
Elizabeth Bennet may yearn for baby Pemberley, but she has her own share of misfortunes to manage. Her cousin Mr. Collins, heir to the Longbourn entail, has decided that marrying her will add very greatly to his future happiness.
While the estate dragon agrees–and insists she accept him– Elizabeth and the rest of Longboun’s dragons insist he is the last man in the world whom she could ever be prevailed on to marry–a better dragon’s dinner than a husband.
It’s disappointment and spleen all around as Lady Catherine de Bourgh involves herself in the affair after hearing reports of a most alarming nature. There are few people in England besides herself who could make things worse. In that, Lady Catherine is a true proficient.
Baby Pemberley’s fate is caught in a deadly tangle of families and fortunes, forcing Darcy and Elizabeth to take the biggest gamble of their lives to win or lose it all.
“I only wish I had listened to that little voice in the back of my head sooner as things became rapidly more complex…”
I thought as I read the 8th book in the series & tried to remember what I had this character or that character sound like 5 books ago or 3 and what effects I used to create this dragons voice… and on and on…
But its always fun to revisit them to review.
Yes, Baby Pemberly was most adamant about having two keepers. Mr. Bennet and Longbourn weren’t very helpful either ?
I loved this story. Oh, baby Pemberley was so cute and dangerous at the same time. Here is a quote from my review…
“What Elizabeth could do with her cape was just short of amazing. Those gestures and actions were the icings on the cake. I was amazed at the performance of her meeting with dragons and various creatures. At every turn, she was earning their respect and esteem. Darcy was constantly asking the question… how did she know to do that? I was constantly asking the question… how did Maria Grace know to do that? It was fricking awesome.”
I absolutely love this series.
I already have this story on my pile of TBR and will probably read it next. I have read all the others in this series and enjoyed them.
