  1. I agree with your decision that it would really not add anything to an ongoing story. But thanks for sharing.

  2. Dear Maria,
I really enjoyed reading this deleted scene. It is always nice to see the interaction between the Colonel and Darcy. It was a delight to read this.
    Joan

  3. I lenjoyed this deleted scene – thank you sharing it
Just a query what are druthers ( first paragraph and third line down) – I may be misunderstanding or just ignorant British – I assume the word is brothers?
What a pity I think that books cannot be unlimited length with all these deleted scenes left in

    • Hi Ann –

      druthers is a noun

      a person’s preference in a matter.
“if I had my druthers, I would prefer to be a writer”
Origin – late 19th century: from a US regional pronunciation of I’d rather, contraction of would rather.

      I hope that helps. 🙂

  4. I agree with Ann – it’s such a shame to cut these scenes from the book but I understand the need. I really enjoyed this scene, don’t you just love Darcy? (I do!!!)
    Thanks for sharing these Maria.

  5. I love the brother/cousin bond between our guys. I just love how Darcy takes care of things, especially something as important as the settlement papers. Yes, it had to go, but we still got to read it in the out-takes or deleted scenes. Thanks for sharing that with us. I can’t wait to read this.

  6. Well, since I already wished for more Darcy/Colonel interaction (to understand more their attitude at the end of the book, just before the wedding) I think this answers my need nicely (that is, I didn’t feel this one unnecessary). Even here, I wished you would have expanded on what Darcy meant by the Colonel not having changed his ways (that is, the first interpretation which meant a critique, not the approval he gave afterwards). Did he mean Richard was a rake, or too much a rough soldier, or what? Perhaps I should reread the first book to refresh my memory of their interactions there.
I like your determination to keep the style tight, but I also like scenes that show relationships and motivations. I thought the idea of the Colonel restaining his desire because of Mary having already lost a fiancé jsut pre-wedding was a nice touch, I would have liked to see it in the book.
In any case, as always, I appreciate reading the cut scenes as bonus! Thank you!

    • I think Darcy’s statement was also about him not really understanding Fitzwilliam very well before. Darcy was critical of him in the past without really understanding the deeper character underneath. As Fitzwilliam rose to the occasion of inheriting Rosings, Darcy came to understand him better.

  7. Thank you for sharing this scene!

Darcy having the ability to do marriage settlements for the Bennet girls sounds like a good set-up for another book. Will you be doing one for Kitty?

    • Kitty? Sigh? Right now I don’t have plans for it a I have no clue about the girl myself! Maybe if she suddenly reveals a strong personality to me, I might. But in this series, she isn’t really a strong force. Thanks for asking!
