Parlor Games for Christmastide — 4 Comments

  1. How fascinating! As you say, some of these could be quite controversial if the players wished.
I’m surprised there wasn’t a version of Postman’s Knock. (Maybe Darcy could invent that one if Elizabeth was playing? ?)
As children we always got a family board game at Christmas and I kept that tradition with my own children. Playing games was a major part of our enjoyment of Christmas and my grandchildren are now starting to benefit from the tradition.
Thank you so much. Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year

  2. This was an informative post and I was horrified as [in my mind’s eye] I imagined Mr. Collins trying to participate in the games. Or, for Mr. Darcy to be willing to participate. This would have to be a very intimate grouping of friends, I would think. A very private person would have a hard time participating. Darcy would be walking the perimeter disgusted. Charles would be in the middle of the fun, while Mr. Collins tripped over his own feet and mouth and would be paying forfeits left and right. Dang! That would be an evening from ‘you-know-where’ for sure. Thanks for this glimpse into the fun and games of the past.
