Pemberley: Mr. Darcy’s Dragon, Ch 5 — 16 Comments

  1. Mr. Darcy’s Dragon just landed with a soft and promising “thud” into my Kindle “to read” collection. Of course, as soon as I finish grading these blasted MLA research paper outlines, then I’ll be able to enjoy past Chapter Five with a clear conscience. What a lovely All Hallows’ Eve treat to enjoy when I finish my work for the day. I can’t wait!!

Thank you, Maria! Do you know how many books will be in the Jane Austen’s Dragons series?

I wish you a safe and enjoyable Hallowe’en!!

    Warmly,
    Susanne 🙂

    • Susanne,
right now I’m planning 3 books to get through the entire Pride and Prejudice story arc. After that, I’m kicking around a dragon version of Persuasion, and a couple more are possible about the dragons Rosings and Matlock. So there could be 5 or 6 or even more if inspiration strikes. 😉

  2. I don’t yet know what to think of Longbourn, but I love your story. Incorporating Darcy’s thoughts and mental eye rolling gave the chapter a bit of fun.

  3. Read it and now so ready for the next book which was a surprise as I didn’t pay attention to “book 1” notation…can’t wait!

    • I’ve just about gotten the plot for #2 hammered out, so I’ll be starting on it soon. I hated having to split it up, but after 340 pages, I really had to call that plot arc done. 🙂

      • That is good news, Maria.
I noticed the e-book chapters are not the same divisions as the chapters on here. That is fine only a little confusing.
I stayed up late reading it while the earthquakes were going on last night and finished the whole of book one before 2 am.
It would have been hard to sleep anyway.
I am very much looking forward to book 2 now.
“Patience is a virtue which few possess…” especially in this instant gratification age!
Still it is a good excuse to get some real life work done, after all we are not ALL grand ladies who can spend our days sitting in drawing rooms and enlarging our minds by extensive reading…
        😉

        • The book chapters are too long to post as they are, so I have to make the two a little different.

I’m so glad you enjoyed book one. I hope to be finished with he plot planning and on to real writing on book 2 soon.

  4. Hi Maria,
My children are delighted with this story and are demanding I check it every day for updates so I am glad that your comments seems to say that the first book in the trilogy is available for downloading from kindle. They, and I, are really enjoying this version of the story. They got a little bored with the original once it stopped talking about the horses…
[RANDOM FACT]: At the time I started reading them P&P they were learning to ride on a pair of horses called Mr Bingly and Mr Darcy – both palomino. Their favourite line was in chapter 3 Where everyone is speculating about who the handsome new officer may be, whom they have just met on the streets of Maryton. It says:
“…. the whole party were still standing and talking together very agreeably, when the sound of horses drew their notice, and Darcy and Bingley were seen riding down the street.”
After Mr Collins arrived however they lost interest.
I think they were a little young (10, 8 and 6), but after “Pemberley: Mr Darcy’s Dragon” , and 3 more years under their belts, they will probably be interested enough to finish the story.
I am currently reading the Gaskell’s North and South and they are quite interested as long as I skip some of the more intense dialogue parts between Mr Thornton and Mr Hale or the other manufacturers.
Anyway, I just want to thank you for sharing your talent with us all here on this site and allowing us an opportunity to interact with you over it.
I still hold hope that Jane Bennet will discover than she too can hear dragons, but it is very clear that Elizabeth is by far the most suitable to become Longbourne’s dragon keeper. I wonder how that is going to work out if the two estate keepers discover they wish to be married after all… I guess they might be able to spend half the year at each estate, but that cannot be ideal especially considering J.A.’s opinion of ‘convenient distances’ as expressed through Elizabeths’s conversation with Darcy on the subject (Charlotte being settled ‘so close’ to her family), while at Rosings.
Oh well, this is one of the delightful wrapping up puzzels you no doubt have been thinking on and I look forward to seeing how this all resolves.
    Thanks again.
    Esther in NZ

    • Esther, I just read on the news NZ had massive earthquakes….were you affected? Are you safe? I have not been there but all the movies shot there show us a BEAUTIFUL country. Hope you and yours are OK. 7.8 magnitude

      • Thank you Sheila,
Yes we are all safe and my two oldest children who live in Christchurch (nearer the epicentre) were both very prompt in letting me know their safety. It appears that there were only two deaths, which is a wonderful miracle, but most roads in the South Island are closed, which is a problem because my friend and I were planning to fly down to retrieve a car this week and then drive it home with her two children, who are now stranded in Dunedin with relatives… At least they are all safe and well.
We are very used to earthquakes here and don’t get too frightened. It was a very exciting night last night however, they were quaking all over the country and there was lots of minor (and some major) damage done, although not in my area.
        Thanks for you concern. 🙂

    • Ii am so delighted your children are enjoying the story. They might enjoy knowing that I came up with the basic idea for the regency-era dragons sitting with my sons one day over pizza. They helped me sketch out what the dragon society would look like and how they would interact with people. That makes this story very dear to me.

I’ve been considering the answers to what is going to happen with Mr. Collins. I hope that the resolution make everyone happy. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the entries to Elizabeth’s Commonplace Book of Dragons.

      Thanks, Esther!

  5. Just wanted to stop by and say that you have done a wonderful job with this book, and I am quite impatiently waiting for the next book!! I typically shy away from books like this, but I gave it a chance and am so glad I did! I couldn’t put it down.

I am also quite enjoying the preview of the Commonplace book from Lizzie. I would love to see you continue on with the story past the original Pride & Prejudice story arc!! Give us a glimpse of married life with Dragons ;o)

    • I’m so glad you gave it a chance, Crissie! I really appreciate it. I have a few ideas about continuing the story beyond the original P&P arc. I think life with dragons would have to be pretty interesting!
