Pemberley: Mr. Darcy’s Dragon, Ch 3 — 15 Comments

  1. Having raised many birds, I have to say that a fairy dragon would be a nice addition to my flock. I would be pleased to take any and all of them! I am glad you have given them all definite and distinct personalities, because like people, birds can be very individual, and I should think a dragon would be even more so. This is such a great way to start a Monday morning. I do love this story. I never was much interested in dragons, but your dragons have such sass and cleverness, that it would be hard not to like them. Plus, Lizzy, Darcy, and dragons, oh my! I also like that Mary is taking a more prominent place in this story. It is nice to see Jane take a back seat periodically. Only two weeks before the book drops and I can indulge in a few delightful hours of make believe. I am delighted that there will be a series of these books. I don’t know how you came up with the idea, but it was truly inspired. Thank goodness Mrs. B can’t see or hear them, because she would be loudly boasting that they couldn’t be so beautiful for nothing…

    • Where the story came from…there’s a story in that. I have three sons and have always been on the lookout for things we could do together. Turns out they love to talk plots with me. So over lunch at the pizza buffet one day I threw out the idea ‘what if dragons in Regency England’. They went to two with the possibilities and came up with a whole underground dragon culture. That conversation seeded the idea that’s been cooking for a few years in the back of my head. So, once again, blame the kids!

  2. Isn’t it nice to have something in common with your children as they grow. My oldest is the most “into” dragons, dwarfs, etc. She loves Piers Anthony and Anne McCaffrey. We bond over books i.e., Star Wars and Terry Brooks’ Shannara series as well as The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings although she likes the moves and not the books of the latter. My son is also into all of this and he liked the Red Wall series growing up (by Brian Jacques). Loving this story and looking forward to reading more. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Loving this story. Phoenix is beautiful. I wonder, is the third egg really a dud, or will it hatch where it shouldn’t?

  4. Lovely as the new fairy dragons are, my favorite of this chapter is Walker! His “betrayal” of Darcy by bonding with Elizabeth was too fun!

  5. I loved it!

Obviously Darcy’s “falcon” recognizes a worthy human when he sees one. I guess Darcy will have to bang his head against the wall first. And why do I have the impression that the fire dragon will bond with Elizabeth?

The little fairy dragons were so sweet! And Mary was so good with hers! I guess it will make a world of difference for her to have her dragon. A pity the third egg didn’t hatch… 🙁

I better get back to work or I won’t finish all I have pending on time.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tale!

  6. The more I read of this story the more excited I am for Halloween so I can read it!!! Love Walker in this chapter! Darcy’s snobbery will be his undoing and I can’t wait to see Walker eventually call him on it (just a feeling that will happen at some point). Love that Rustle is now deigning to talk to Aunt Gardiner. Sad about the egg that didn’t hatch, but Heather and Phoenix sound adorable! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Mr Bennet certainly was not reticent in letting Darcy know how he feels over the missing egg business. After this short discussion of Longbourn, I can’t wait to meet him. Between Longbourn, Walker, April, and the short glimpse of Heather and Phoenix, it definitely seems like the personalities of dragon companion and their human keeper tend to be well matched, almost mirror images. Which in part could explain Walker’s interactions with Elizabeth. Or as earlier suggested, a foreshadowing of the fire drake choosing Elizabeth! But would that truly mean the dragon would “dispose” of Darcy, or was that his own musing?
