According to Wikipedia, ‘a superhero is a type of heroic character possessing extraordinary talents, supernatural phenomena, or superhuman powers and is dedicated to a moral goal or protecting the public.’ Sounds like a writer to me!

Join me as another one of these unsung superheroes invites into their personal ‘batcave’.

If you were to write the ‘origin’s episode’ of your writing what would be the most important scenes?

The most important scenes from my origins episode would have to be the dream I had that the Time Traveler’s Rock stories came from.

What did your early efforts look like?

I didn’t enjoy writing at an early age. I was 40 when I began to enjoy writing and wrote my first novel. It was a collection of true stories I experienced.

Are they still around to be used as bribes and blackmail material?

I still have it waiting for the perfect time to publish it. It needs a lot of editing and I will have to change some people’s names for their protection.

All superheroes have their mild-mannered secret identity, what is yours? I promise we won’t tell.Rick Heiman

I’m a lot like Clark Kent, mild mannered writer during the daytime and superhero crime fighter at night.

Who are your partners in crime?

I have over a million partners in crime nationwide.

What are their superpowers?

Our superpower is that we are human lie detectors. We are all able to talk to a bad guy and we see the words coming out of his mouth. When they tell the truth the words are green but when they lie all their words come out of their mouth red and bold.  😉

Where do you get your superpowers from?

It took many years of training and practice to develop my superpowers.

Where is your secret lair and what does it look like?

My secret lair is my car. No one knows it belongs to a superhero until I’m ready to show them it is.

What kind of training do you do to keep your superpowers in world saving form?

I keep my superpowers up to date by constantly using them and taking an occasional class when I can.

How do you insure they are used only for good?

My powers can only be used for good. If I try to use them for something bad they do not work.

Granted, you probably don’t’ get to wear your superhero costume a lot, but if you did, what would it look like?

I actually do get to wear my superhero costume all the time but it looks just like everyday clothing.

What is your kryptonite?

Donuts and hot chocolate are my kryptonite. All I need to do is see or smell one of the two and I gotta have them. Chasing the bad guys will just have to wait a few minutes.

What are the biggest challenges faced in your writing?

The biggest challenges I face with my writing is that I still work full time as a superhero and there’s not always time for me to write.

What was the supervillain that threatened to stop your latest project and how did you vanquish it?

The supervillain always threatening me is the sleep monster. He is always sneaking over my shoulder putting me to sleep whenever I get a chance to read or write.

What important lessons have you learned along the way?

The most important lesson I’ve learned is to never give up. If you have dreams like being anything from a writer to a police officer, you never give up. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

What have been the best/most memorable experiences along the way?

Getting good reviews for my stories are the most memorable experiences for me. Having someone always asking me when I will be finished with the next book in the series feels really good as well.

If you did this again what would you do differently and what would you not change?

The main thing I would do different would be to study harder in English class.

What is the best (writing or otherwise) advice you have ever gotten and why.

There is a lot of great advice in Stephen King’s book “On Writing”. I also had a high school teacher who once told me she expected nothing less than perfect from me. I had just aced a vocabulary test in her class and she told me if I could do as well on her test, she expected that quality of work from me all the time. I’ve always remembered her little push.

Tell us about you new book and why we need to drop everything and get it now. · What’s in store for you in the future?

I am working on the third book in my Time Traveler’s Rock series. My protagonist, James is learning how to control when and where he goes in time. He goes back to the 1960’s where he meets me as a child and gets to experience firsthand some of the adventures I’ve been through as a child, later as a soldier in the Army, and then as a rookie police officer in Florida.

Do you have any other big projects on the horizon?

I have a lot of different stories just waiting to be written.
