Boxing Day Charity — 9 Comments

  1. Well, I must say I have not read of this possible pairing previously. But the traditions of handing out boxes/gifts to the less fortunate is something more could practice. Thanks for a glimpse into this practice. It is obvious that a lot of planning and costs went into this for the Gardiners. Happy New Year to all.

  2. Now I have to go back and re-read this book. It’s a shame my memory is so poor, I don’t remember how this all turns out! Thanks for the excerpt!

  3. Mr and Mrs Gardiner are so very generous to prepare and gift useful things to children in need. I like the story. Thanks for sharing the excerpt and offering the giveaway, Maria.

  4. How lovely. I remember this scene from the book, but I did not focus on the degree of the Gardiners’ involvement with charity: to prepare all year long for Boxing Day charity is something not many well to do people practice today. Not to mention, they don’t just give money (I imagine the Gardiners don’t have that much money to spare as to create a whole coach load worth of gifts) but their time and effort (I imagine Mrs. Gardiner has a lot to do and could use some time to just relax instead of doing needlework in preparation for Christmas. I especially appreciate the fact that their children learn not to despise children poorer than themselves but to play with them as equals. What beautiful example of Christian charity.

  5. I haven’t yet read this story, but this excerpt has made me want to read it to find out how Bingley and Kitty end up liking each other. This was a nice, personal view into what Boxing Day meant for people on both sides of the giving and receiving.
